What cables do I need to hook up my new HDTV?

What cables do I need to hook up my new HDTV?

That, of course, depends upon the specific HDTV product you've purchased. At a basic level you need to use a set of component video interconnects between a DBS Satellite box, ATSC off-air tuner or similar source to carry the HD picture information to the television or projector. Coaxial component video cables will deliver any HD image up to and including 1080p for any source-to-display distance up to about 150 feet without degradation or compromise (assuming you're using a quality interconnect product).

If you have a DVI equipped HDTV source such as a cable box or satellite receiver, you can use a DVI-D interconnect to make a single-wire connection between the tuner and the display. Most quality DVI-D cables are dual-link compatible, but any HDTV source will require only single-link to operate. DVI-D is an effective connection for all digital video sources for lengths up to about thirty feet.

Because these cables don't address sound, you will also need to make an audio connection. Most often you'll use a TOSLINK digital audio connection that is best served by a precision quartz glass TOSLINK interconnect.

The newest HDTV sources and display products will utilize the new HDMI interface. This cable offers true digital video support up to 1080p and includes digital multi-channel audio and control connections in a single, easy-to-use interface.
