What are the critical elements of good cable construction?

What are the critical elements of good cable construction?

First and foremost, recognize questionable claims! No properly designed cable can improve a picture or sound source. No cable will make your DVD player look "better"! All any interconnect can do is to provide a connection that limits or avoids degradation of the signal. Any cable that requires batteries, offers to "improve" picture or sound quality through built-in circuitry or compensation schemes, or otherwise purports to change the quality of the content should be the subject of immediate suspicion!

A quality interconnect will exhibit excellent build quality. If the connector can be disassembled, look at the quality of the solder connection. Is it shiny and clean? If so, then it is a good solder joint. Dull solder joints may be "cold soldered" and could fail. Also, excessive "flux" on the solder joint is indicative of poor manufacturing practices - look for a clean, quality connection.
